How to help your dog sleep better

Looking for useful tips on how to help my dog sleep better?

Are you wondering “how can I help my dog sleep better?” or “What can I do, to help my dog sleep?”.

Well assuming your dog isn’t suffering from any medical conditions, there are a few things you can easily do to help your dog get a good nights rest.

We hope you find them useful.

10 Tips to help your dog sleep better.

1). Training. There’s no better place to start when it comes improving your dogs quality life.  Spend time training your dog or dogs in all things in their daily lives. It will also help your dog sleep better.

2. Consistency.  Try to be consistent and build good daily and nightly routines, not ‘for your dog’ but ‘with your dog’.  From what time you wake up, meals and walk times. Good routines will help you both sleep well.

3. Keep your dog active. During the day try to not let your dog sleep too much. If possible. While your out, if possible let them be out in the garden, ask if they can stay with a friend for an hour or 2. The more active a dog is during the day the better the chances your dog will sleep during the night.

3. Patients. If you can, try not to be to eager to get your dog out for a walk right after a meal. As long as your pooch is not showing signs of a ‘bathroom emergency’, try and wait an hour or may be 2, before taking your dog for a walk and some play time. This will help reduce the chances of bloating and digestion issues.

4. Tire them out. There is a big difference between ‘a walk’ and a ‘good walk’. A walk around the block is not the same as a good mile and a half + 20mins fetch & play time on a field to get your dogs heart rate up.  Ideally at least an hour before its your dogs sleep time.

6). Play times over!… After the last good walk of the day, try not to be overly playful with your dog, especially in the last hour. Try and let your dogs last couple of hours of the day be all about winding down. A chew toy can be a great tool to keep your dog occupied this time of night.

7). Final potty break. What ever suits your routine make sure you take your dog out for one last chance to do their ‘business’ anywhere up to 20 mins before sleep time should be fine.

8. Rations. With your dogs sleep time almost in sight, try not to give additional food or drinks, or at least not in any large quantities.

9. Set the mood. Find a great place to locate your dog bed.  Preferably somewhere away from radiators, loud noises and bright lights.  Consider creating a cosy safe space with a pet cave to covert your dog bed into a cave or den like space.

10. Set up a camera. If you find your dog is waking through the night regularly, set a camera up and see what’s going on. Is there a cat at the window, a mouse in the house, or neighbours making noises perhaps… This may help you decide what action to take.
